How to Turn a Hole Into a Swimming Pool

The story goes like this…My dog died. I deal with grief by working outside. I dug a hole with the intention of building a concrete koi pond. I’ve done a couple in other houses… no worries… In the next few months, my kid was born and the project came to a hard stop. The hole grew over… Until one of my buddies suggested I dig a giant hole and make a pool… heh… beer…

I didn’t grow up with a pool, but remembered how much I loved them as a kid. Figured it be the best present ever for my new son.

…and the hole got bigger!   Start Date: June 18, 2010

  1. I love this! I’m sorry for your loss too :(. I love that you loved your dog so much that this was what drove you to complete such an incredible project.

  2. Thank you for the kind comment. We’ve had a lot of enjoyment in our backyard since. Take care!

  3. Who was the man that built the pool, I would like to ask him some questions about his pool.

  4. I know exactly how you feel.

When I lost my forever dog the only thing that could manage my grief was to go out in the garden and dig. I made a garden in his favorite spot to lay under the dining room bay window. I put a little dog angel statue under the window in his spot. Then I planted white flowering plants. There is a stepping stone with his name and a St. Francis statue that holds his collar. Nothing as ambitious as you, but a similar way to work off my grief.

  5. Thank you for sharing.. The work helps. Those little guys don’t ever really disappear. Maybe someday, I’ll tell my son I think my dog reincarnated into him… playing with the idea. 🙂

  6. Hey I’m super interested in the costs involved in this project. This looks absolutely amazing. True work of art!

  7. I paid a next door neighbor, who was in between jobs, to help me dig and fill sandbags.

Out the door it was $16k – I won’t ever do it again, but I could do it for much cheaper if I had to. 🙂

I have a spreadsheet somewhere if you are interested.

Do you mind sending me the spreadsheet? This look awesome, and I’m assuming you are in Austin? Way to go man!
